Perspective
In each situation in our lives we react a certain way to
what is happening, in many cases reacting differently than other people. Why do
we react differently than others? It is perspective! Perspective is defined as
“a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.”
In a light hearted way, (in some cases) a football game
comes to mind. You may be pulling for your favorite team and your good friend
is pulling for the opposing team. Each of you are pulling for your team with
all your might. At the end of the game, one of the teams prevails while the
other team is dejected over the loss.
If your team won and your friends team lost. You are thrilled, your
friend not so much. From your perspective it is awesome to have a win, your
friend isn’t happy at all. Why? It is from the perspective you are coming from.
You may have a particular point of view concerning a matter
and many around you don’t share your view. You think in the manner you do
because you have experienced certain events in your life, that wasn’t shared by
your neighbors. Why don’t they see it your way? As I stated, they haven’t
experienced it. You can tell them about it from your perspective.
Debates are held to allow different perspectives to be
heard. In the dictionary the word Debate is defined as “a formal discussion on
a particular topic in a public meeting or legislative assembly, in which
opposing arguments are put forward.” Each of us has a perspective different
than those around you. If you think about it, it can be a good thing. Consider
the times a natural disaster takes place. You have individuals from various
backgrounds coming together with ideas. When they meet together to “hash out”
ideas, they will eventually come to the best conclusion to help the most people
effectively.
With the thought in mind of individuals from different
backgrounds coming together, some will discover that there idea wasn’t the best
for the particular situation and will follow someone else’s idea. You will see
their perspective and the wisdom behind it. It could be reversed. You could
present an idea from your perspective that the others had not considered,
because you dealt with it before.
Be open to different perspectives. It could change the
trajectory of your life and take your life down a road you never expected.
