To Be Washed With Hyssop
We have heard the term in church on occasion when the pastor would refer to hyssop in an account connected to King David when he would ask for forgiveness. King David would ask God to wash him with hyssop. Why did David ask God to wash him with “hyssop?” Was it for healing and to be purified? Let’s take a moment to examine this. In Bible typology, the Hyssop symbolized purification.
In the Book of Leviticus, hyssop was applied together with other substances to a person who had recently been healed from a skin disease and even used to purify a house that had previously contained mold, this was an outward use.
As to a deeper use, we can look at a few sources and we find, for example, from the Bible Almanac stating that the common hissup is a sweet smelling plant of the mint family. It grows from 12 to 18 inches high with small pointed leaves and spikes of various covered flowers.
Psalm 51:7 refers to hyssop as a symbol of inner cleansing. The Spirit Filled Bible said the herb was associated with cleansing and purification, and it’s use symbolically for the cleansing of the soul. The Hebrew word for wash is not one used for simple cleaning of a dish and water, but rather the washing of clothes by beating and pounding, David wanted a thorough cleansing from the sin.
Before Jesus came all sacrifices occurred yearly for the covering of the sins of the people. All David as well as anyone had for forgiveness was the sacrifice of animals. The use of hyssop was for cleansing and purification but not the eradication of sin. Jesus took our beating and pounding so we could have not only a cleansing from sin but the total eradication of sin. We find a note in the Dake Bible that all blood of sacrifices was sprinkled with hyssop, hence the expression here to be cleansed from all sin, by faith, in the true atoning blood. As we all know Jesus came so we could have the relationship with God that was intended before Adam severed the relationship by disobedience. Hyssop was for cleansing and the blood of Jesus gets rid of sin.
